Uncle Paul and Aunt Ya Ya visit

We had a surprise visit recently! Uncle Paul was in from Peru and brought Aunt Ya Ya from Erie for a sleepover visit! It was so nice to see them both. We haven't seen Ya Ya in almost three years. It was a quick visit, just an overnight, but it was so lovely to get caught up with what's happening in our lives and relax and play together. I'm thankful for the friends we have!

Nakai has made friends with one of Nolan's teammates brothers...(does that make sense?)...I am so thankful for this child! It certainly makes it easier for the littles to be at every practice and every game and every tournament, when they have each other! It's not easy to be the tag-a-long brother and to have to travel so much. Nakai and his friend have so much fun together! Here they are practicing gymnastics tricks! A double pushup, I think it is!

Nolan is playing soccer on a league out of Pittsburgh/Erie area this year. It's a higher level of play than is available in our area. He works really hard and it's a pretty grueling schedule for us all. Well, a few weeks ago, he had a game in Erie. We had gone up the night before and stayed over at Grandma and Grandpa Sanborns so we wouldn't have to travel so far early the next morning. Well as we were preparing to drive the remaining hour the next day, Grandpa started expressing concern about the weather. He wanted to be sure we all had coats, gloves, blankets, umbrellas, hot hands, etc. A storm had come in and the winds were like 40 mph...it was freezing, raining, hail, the whole bit. I was trying to keep the whole scene positive (this was not my first freezing, wet game after all)...and rushed around getting the cars packed up...even the hot cocoa was ready! The whole way to Erie...I'm thinking, "this really doesn't look safe...I'm a little worried about this.."....but we pushed on. When we got there, the weather was even worse. We sat in the cars waiting for a decision to be made...finally, we got it! They were moving the game to an INDOOR arena! Woot! Nolan had never played indoor before...and when we went inside to the dome, he stopped at the doorway...I asked him if he was okay...and he looked at me and said, "This is like my dream coming true, Mom!" He was pumped! It reminded him of FIFA! I love this kid! So, we watched a great game, in a warm, dry dome and couldn't stop smiling!!! What a trip! And to further make his day, THEY WON!!!

Snappy goes home...

So, Nolan found this snapping turtle in the lake in the early Fall. He named him "Snappy"...and quickly started building him a habitat that he would be happy in, in our backyard. He took his boat and fishing net out every day and caught him some fish.. (that whole process was very interesting to me...he'd sit on the rope of the fishing net so it wouldn't fall out of the boat...and would drag the net behind him.. he'd row down the canal, turn around and row back..) Well...now that the weather is getting colder, I've been talking to Nolan about returning Snappy to the lake so he can settle back in before winter and remember how to find his own food...and all that stuff. He hesitantly agreed and said he'd return him but it would be so hard....he'd miss him and didn't want to forget him...so...we decided that pictures were in order...and here they are. Goodbye, Snappy! I hope you are happy to be home!

Diversity Means...

..."That my world is beautiful!" Nakai chose to take part in this years PTA Reflections project. He submitted a photo collage surrounding the theme of Diversity Means. We were just notified that his project placed at the school level and will now be judged at the district's council level. He's pretty excited! I'm glad our schools participate in the Reflections project...it gives children a chance to be creative, to think in a different way, and to really consider what a topic means. Last year, Nolan's project went all the way to the state level...very exciting! This year, Nolan chose not to participate. He's just too busy right now...so Nakai entered and is excited to be part of things! Congrats on your first level win!

Trick or Treat!

We had just gotten home from Ohio in time to trick or treat...I think we were all tired and sort of inconvenienced by the Holiday! But...we managed to pull it together and go for a stroll around the neighborhood. Nakai was a motorcycle due, Teah was an 80's girls and Nolan...well, Nolan was a soccer player (far stretch, I know!) Teah went with friends, and the boys and I went together. It's always funny to me that my children are never really excited to trick or treat...Nakai kind of wants to keep going for awhile, but Teah and Nolan are really just one street kind of trick or treaters...Nolie doesn't even want to hit the houses on the other side of the street as we are coming back towards home...come to think of it, he's not really a candy kind of child, either. He's also pretty shy and tells me that he doesn't like all those people looking at and talking to him. Funny! I always enjoy seeing all the children and guessing what their costumes are... also, strolling the neighborhood and chatting with the neighbors is fun for me. I'm not so much into the candy thing either. Maybe next year, Nolan will be old enough to pass out candy at our house, I think he'd like that more. We'll see!

Happy Birthday, Nakai!

This one has been hard for me...not sure why? Maybe because he's my baby? hmm...anyway, Nakai turned 8 while we were in Ohio for a soccer tourney. I feel bad because his birthday got swept up in a whirlwind this year. The night before we left, his arm got broken at wrestling practice...no fun! Then, our fun birthday plans for Ohio had to be altered a bit! Our plans to celebrate at the super awesome indoor waterpark (Kalahari Resort) could no longer happen...but Nakai and I were creative! We spent the evening having dinner at his choice of restaurant (Panera)..then headed out to see Puss in Boots at the theatre, and followed that up with shopping at Toys R Us with his birthday money. Then back to the hotel to play and watch cable! (a novelty for him!)...All in all, he had a great birthday.

Once we got back home, Nakai chose a friend to come and sleepover and we went to Fun Central and had pizza and played games. I felt bad for the friend though, because Nakai fell asleep at 8 and his little friend stayed up until past midnight, just playing in Nakai's room! Funny!

It's so hard to believe he's 8 though! Seems like just yesterday I was wearing him everywhere, either sling style or in the backpack... Wow, does the time fly! Nakai makes everyone smile and laugh and I can't imagine my life without him...such a sweet, snuggly boy!

Nolie hits the double digits!

Can you believe Nolan is 10? I can't... It sure doesn't seem like ten years have passed since this wild, dirty adventure boy was born. I remember being so sad that I was having a boy...I wanted so badly to be a good mom and I didn't think I knew anything about boys or boy things...or dirt or sports. I just didn't think I could handle it. The road has been long from there to here...but I think we've done pretty well. I thank Creator everyday for bringing me this sweet boy child! He has taught me so much! He's amazing! Happy Birthday, Nolan...may your journey be filled with adventure, surprises, and so much dirt! I love you!

He celebrated with friends at the Brookville Dam (one of his favorite spots). The day was cool and very rainy at first, but the clouds parted and the sun came out and it ended up being warm and gorgeous!

Labor Day on the farm

We headed down (?) to Sanborn's Farm for Labor Day weekend. Teah brought her friend Sidney with her and they had fun hanging out with the goats and hunting down baby kittens and talking to the cows! Funny girls! Nolan and Nakai rode tractors with Grandpa and looked for toads and things. Grandma and I had a great visit and I really enjoyed relaxing for awhile. I needed it. Teah wasn't feeling too well and requested chicken soup which was ready and waiting by dinner time! Gotta love Grandma's soup! We all spent some harvesting time in the gardens and brought home lots of goodies. Can't wait to go back for Thanksgiving...we always enjoy getting away from home and hanging out on the farm. The children all said goodbye to Bandit the dog though...not sure he'll be on the farm the next time we come out.

Mama Kimberly visits!

What a nice surprise to open the door and see Mama Kimberly and Sky and Ike! We haven't seen these guys for a year. They stayed the night and we all enjoyed kayaking and swimming the next day and just catching up after so long apart. Skylar's eye is healing up though he still has no vision in it. They both won triatholons in their age divisions! Woot! So good to see old friends again! We really should do it more. Our lives are so busy doing things we must that we rarely have time for doing the things we love...like visiting!

First Day of School

So hard to believe that summer is over and school is starting already. I know we'll miss the leisure days as we get into the busy-ness of Fall. Teah is going into 8th grade, Nolan 4th and Nakai 2nd. May the year be filled with good memories!

The Austin Dam Show

We had the best time at the Dam Show this year! It was the first year we brought the children along and I'm so glad we did. They loved hearing all the bands and having some freedom at the festival. Teah met a friend her age in the booth next to ours and they wandered all over the place dancing and being teenage girls! Nolan was off in the creek and the woods finding critters...snakes and fish and cool bugs most of the time...and Nakai was very busy making friends with everyone! So fun! Duder kept up with his reputation of being the best "dam dog" ever! It was so fun to see all our vending friends again and catch up on everyone's lives. Camping was great and we can't wait to do it all again next year! Vending really is the best way to see a show!

Day 1 at Rehoboth Beach

We made it! After a long day of traveling through the most beautiful mountains of Pennsylvania, we finally arrived at the ocean. The last part of the journey was the worst...it took us 2 hours to go the last 10 miles! Seriously! I guess there was an event called "the running of the bulls" happening in Dewey and also I think the week changed for everyone from Ocean City to Rehoboth on the same day...and there was some construction on the bridge...anyway, it was very congested. But, we made it! We were so happy to pull up at our cottage.

I would definitely recommend the cottages to anyone looking to vaca near Rehoboth Beach. Before we even had the car unloaded, Nolan had discovered the power of a cactus! (and I realized that I had not packed tweezers because I wasn't anticipating ticks) He had also caught a toad, found a bucketful of seashells and walked into the door with a prehistoric-looking crab (later learned it was a horseshoe crab)... he was talking about fishing for sharks and wanting to find some jellyfish. It made my heart sing to see my sweet boy so happy! He was so excited about everything! Nakai, on the other hand, was elated to discover that the cottage had satellite tv! (with Spongebob) Teah and Sidney were major helpers, helping to get the car unloaded and things to their appropriate spots. Everyone chose their rooms (boys called the loft!) we ate a quick meal and then everyone was ready to see the ocean! We went to what we thought was a swimming beach and set up our spot. The look on the children's faces was so wonderful...they were in love with the waves at first sight! They were big as it was close to sunset, but everyone had fun chasing and teasing the ocean. Pretty soon though, we noticed that vehicles were driving onto the beach...and setting up major fishing poles...with extremely large hooks! I then realized that we were on a surf fishing beach! Imagine me trying to keep four children out of these lines and hooks....I mean, they are very far out! So....we splashed by the shore and stayed and played in the sand and guess what?!? The guys next to us caught some baby tiger sharks! (scary!) They let Nolan and Nakai touch them before they threw them back. After that, we headed back to the cottage where Nolan went for a bike ride to check out the boats at the Marina, the others watched tv and I enjoyed a peaceful, quiet evening on the screened porch, knitting and looking out at the bay! What a day!

Day 2 at Rehoboth Beach

So, on the second day, the only thing anyone wanted to do was go to the beach! Nolan found a few more crabs and tried his hand at fishing in the bay while everyone got ready to go. This time, we went to an actual SWIM beach, complete with showers and lifeguards. We set up and then everyone was off.

What a great day, playing and splashing, picnicking on the beach....the waves were pretty big so it was a little tricky for me to keep an eye on all 4 at the same time, but we had a wonderful day.

Day 3 at Rehoboth Beach

Day 3 was a long day, full of adventure! We started off early at a different swimming beach and then we headed into town for supplies (groceries, sunscreen, boogie boards), home for lunch and then we went to check out the boardwalk. I turned the girls loose to explore (they did have their phones) and then the boys and I headed for Funland and rode some rides! They had a blast and I was happy to be off the beach during the hottest part of the day. When we caught up with the girls, they were getting tattoed! ( henna of course) After a quick dinner at home, we went back to the swim beach and just enjoyed the rest of the day and evening. We just didn't want to leave! The weather was so nice, the sun had gone down and it was really a beautiful evening. Needless to say, after showers, everyone turned in pretty quickly.

Day 4 at Rehoboth

Day 4 was a scorcher, even very early. We sort of just hung out at home during the morning. Nolan went out exploring by the bay and came back with a vicious crab and some jellyfish in his bucket! He showed me how smart he was to manipulate the jellyfish without getting stung...I was impressed! After lunch, we went into Rehoboth and hung out at the library for a few hours. It was nice. Everyone got to spread out a little and get into a book for awhile. I enjoyed reading with and to the boys and it was nice to escape the heat. Then later, we headed to the beach just as the lifeguards (and most of the crowd) were leaving. It was nice and quiet and we experienced a sweet little summer rain. We stayed and played through it and watched the sun go down on the beach. It was a really great day! Made me so thankful for the opportunity to share this time with my children.

The Day of the Incident...

Okay, so..this day is a little difficult to think back on. We woke up early and realized we only had a few days left so we wanted to spend as much time as possible at the beach. We were on the sand by 9:00 and all set up for a great day. The waves were huge! The lifeguards had put the red flags on the beach by 10:00 (meaning dangerous swim conditions)...but everyone was still in the water and we'd seen the red flags on other days. A few times they blew whistles and had everyone get on dry sand but for the most part, we were out in the water. Can I just say, I love the undulating quality of the waves? The pull and push, the rise and fall, the back and forth, the power of the ocean? It makes you realize how small you really are, in comparison. So anyway, back to the story... The boys were stoked to be catching some huge waves with their boogie boards, the girls had met a friend who was also here for the week and were bodysurfing way out and I was somewhere in the middle, enjoying my solidarity! (and keeping an eye on the boys because Nakai kept getting pulled under) We had lunch on the beach and went right back into the water. We were having so much fun enjoying this beach life. The girls were surfing some big waves. Then, around 2:00, we decided that the waves were getting pretty brutal so we were going to hang on the beach for awhile. As we were making our way out, a gigando wave came crashing down on our side of the beach. Everyone got wiped out...including me. As I was coming up, I noticed that Teah (the super swimmer among us) didn't look good. And then, the wave got me again. As I came up again, I could see she was crying and her head didn't look right. I couldn't get to her though because the wave kept wiping me out..I was also trying to find the boys to be sure they were okay. As I started to get closer, I could see Teah was really hurt and the side of her face was bloody. A man pulled her out and was waving for the lifeguards. Teah passed out. They came running and layed her in the wet sand. It was quicky apparent that her neck was hurt. She kept crying, saying, "I can't feel my head"...which of course had everyone concerned. Pretty soon, back up was there with a back board and neck brace. They got her all strapped in and ran her over the dune to the ambulance who was waiting. Meanwhile, Sidney and the boys ran to gather all of our stuff and get it to the car. Sid rode with Teah in the ambulance, the boys were amazed that they ambulance was yellow and we followed to the hospital. Right away, there was talk of a neck fracture and a plan to fly her to Ocean City to a trauma center was organized. She was having trouble staying awake though so they wanted to stabilize her and get a ct scan and xrays before transporting her. So...lots of waiting....and then...Yippee! The Ct came back good, no fractures! Just a bad cervical strain, concussion and an abrasion on her face. We all breathed a sigh of relief.. no transport needed. I knew she would be okay when she opened her eyes and said, "Mom? Was it the hot lifeguard that rescued me?"...that gave me so much comfort! They cleaned her face up (no stitches needed) and put her in a soft collar. They tried to get her up to check her mobility, but she passed out again. So...they wanted to wait and watch her longer. They had her eat a little bit and drink some fluids and then tried again...she got her feet over the side of the bed and then...passed out. So, we played the waiting game into the late evening and finally around 10:00, she was good to go. We took her back to the cottage with just ibu for pain and an antibiotic to prevent infection. How blessed we are that she's okay! She truly does have angels around her. And..I am so happy that Sidney was with us and that she was able to hang with the boys in the waiting room all day and evening. That wasn't easy or fun for anyone....we were in wet suits, FULL of sand, in a freezing cold hospital....with no food! Good job, guys! UGGG...what a day.... started off so amazing....Whatever! Do I really have to visit the ER in every state we go to? It's usually Nolan though....Thank you Creator for the health and healing of my daughter.

The day after...

So..after a very long, exhausting experience the day before, I was really okay with a quiet day at home...but... when Teah woke up, the first thing she said was, "Mom, we have to go to the beach today." What? Seriously? But then I thought about it and realized that we were leaving the next day. I didn't want everyone to be scared of the ocean, afraid to swim, etc...so I knew we had to go. We headed down to the beach and almost immediately, the lifeguards came over to check on Teah. They said they were so glad we came back. That they usually never got to know how things turned out because the people don't come back. They were glad she wasn't afraid, but did tell me not to let her get in the water passed her knees. We thanked them profusely for saving her and then they got back to work. Teah was so bummed out. She wanted to get in and swim. She spent the day very sad, sitting under our umbrella, watching the action and trying to dodge people's stares. (understandable, but really...the teen girl next to us actually turned her chair around to face Teah and continued to stare at her all day) The boys were very cautious about getting in, but did venture out with their boards every now and then to catch a wave. Mostly though, the day was dedicated to beach play...lots of digging holes in the sand. Sidney did go out for awhile, but even she spent a good deal of time in the sand. Nolan and Nakai were determined to dig all the way down to the ocean! They did dig down far enough that water was flowing at the bottom of their holes. Nakai spent a lot of time "in" his hole with the boogie board on top...it looked really funny! To make Teah feel better, I snapped a few shots of her favorite, dreamy lifeguards to cherish! We enjoyed being out on the beach and spent a long day there...sad that we were going to have to go back home soon..

So, our final day had come. We were all sad to say goodbye. We cleaned up our cottage and loaded the car. We walked over to the Marina to take a closer look at the 4 million dollar yachts that were there. A man was walking by and asked Teah about her neck brace...he had one on too! I though it was nice of him to try and make her feel better about it. He told her he thought the doctor should issue one for each member of the family so they can really understand how it feels! Next we walked down the marina and another guy (on a yact), held his brace up and gave her the thumbs up! I thought it was funny to see so many people at the ocean with neck braces! Anyway, it was nice to see such gorgeous boats. Then we headed to the boardwalk for a final walk. The girls still had money to spend and the boys wanted to go back to Funland. We ate lunch at Grotto's pizza again and then it was time to get on the road. We were sad to go and it was a long trip home, but I have to admit I was breathing a little calmer when I pulled into the driveway. Home! Everyone agrees that they want to come back soon....even Teah!

P.S. Teah update... aside from being really sore and getting some headaches, she is doing very well. She was rechecked by doctors here for neurological issues and was cleared for soccer practice with a few stipulations.... I'm thankful everyday that she's okay. That was too scary.

Once more around the sun for Andy! We made him a little family party while he was sleeping. There was cake, ice cream, flowers, cards, a tank parade and a special guest named Alvin! The tank parade was compliments of Nakai, Nolan invited Alvin (the real, LIVE chipmunk) and Teah decorated the cake. Happy Birthday Andy, we love you! Hope this year is full of opportunity, growth, joy and much love.

Brockway bike ramps

How nice to spend the day on the Brockway Rails to Trails with my children...it was so hot out, but the shade on the trail made it really lovely. We had a picnic and splashed in the creek halfway through our 4 mile ride and then we finished the day watching the boys on the ramps. I love summer!

Nolan's got the fishing bug!

This summer, Nolan has really become interested in fishing. Every day, he wakes up early and rushes down the street to the boat launch. He has made friends with some people who live on the lake and has been granted permission to fish off their dock. He spends all day there...some days he doesn't even come home to eat, but rather packs a cooler with lunch for himself and his friend from next door. He's really, really into it. Nice catch, Nolie!

My sister and I decided at the last minute that we just had to get together, but neither of us had much time off work....so, we packed up our tents, threw kayaks on top of the cars, the bikes on the back and headed for Ohio. We camped together for a few days at Buck Creek State Park, near Dayton. We love this park! We've been camping here for years and it's perfect for us because it's exactly half-way between DuBois and St. Louis. The cousins were so excited to see each other and so were the sisters! It rained quite a bit, but we didn't let that stop us! Nolan and Kaliyah were joined at the hip and Jasmine and Teah enjoyed being older and getting more freedom to roam, explore and kayak on their own. Nakai enjoyed riding bikes and hanging with Nolan. Megan did a great job holding down the kitchen and I made an awesome fire! It was so nice to be able to connect and spend time with family. We played a game of volleyball, watched a movie under the stars, rode bikes, spent lots of time in the water and did plenty of paddling...oh, and the smores! Can't wait to do it again real soon!

Community Days!

Today, the boys competed in another Lego building contest, this time at DuBois Community Days. I really appreciate Tim Britton Construction for always sponsoring this great contest. Nolan and Nakai look forward to each one and practice at home in preparation. This time there were no separate age groups, so all children age I think 5-12 were competing together. 16 children entered today. They had so much fun! It was very sunny and this mama got very sunburned, despite sunscreen.. The contest itself was 45 minutes long and the goal was to create an energy efficient fantasy house using green building techniques.

And the winners are: Blaze Welpott (1st), NOLAN BUSSELL (2nd place!) and Tristan Engle (3rd). Congrats!!

After the contest, we walked around the park, visiting all the booths and standing in line for slides and stuff. I was really impressed with the goodies this year. TCC had free fruit smoothies! Another booth gave out free popcorn and still another had water! I thought it was wonderful, made it really reachable for families to come out and enjoy the day. We didn't spend a dime and everyone felt like they had a good time! The boys really loved this bungee/trampoline thing! The line was really long, but everyone felt it was worth waiting for! We enjoyed this year's Community Days! We were heading back for the parade and fireworks, but it started pouring...so....we decided to head for home. We'll catch the fireworks at the lake this year. Thanks to all of the businesses in our Community and all the volunteers, for making Community Days fun!

A day in the Burgh

We had to go to Children's for a recheck with Teah's surgery team (which went very well, by the way), so we decided to take everyone out of school and make a day of it! We had such a good day. We spent the morning at the hospital and got very good news and then we had a nice lunch and headed to the Carnegie Natural History and Art Museums. The children always love to visit these two museums. We headed for the art first! We explored and talked about what we saw. The boys loved the knights in shining armor and Teah always enjoys van Gogh and other impressionists.

After we had thoroughly explored the Art Museum, we headed over to the Natural History Museum. Teah really likes to hang in the gems and minerals section and I'm sure you'd all guess that Nolan's fave is the dinosaur exhibit! Nakai loves the mammals and American Indian hall. What do I enjoy? A beautiful day with my children, enjoying what they enjoy! I enjoy it all! We needed a day away from our everyday deal, to smile, and relax and just enjoy the art of "being"...

Reflections Project Update

Way back at the beginning of the school year, Nolan entered a photography montage in the PTA Reflections Contest...he won the school level, and he placed at the district level and then it went on to the regional level! We just learned that Nolan's entry placed 2nd in the Intermediate Photography division! Congrats Nolie! It did go on to the State Level, but he did not place, so the project and his medal were returned. What a long run! I'm so proud of my artistic boy!

So this weekend, after the fabulous Birthday slumber party, we were looking for something to do together. A friend of Teah's mentioned the Farmer's Inn...everyone cheered. We've been there in the past, and I have been discouraged each time...I don't know why I thought it would be different this time. Anyway, we went with open minds and looked forward to a day together in the beautiful woods. Off we went. When we got there, we saw the cute little goats and lambs and donkeys and I thought, "oh, this is nice"...everyone had fun buying the food from the quarter machine and feeding the babies. In the parking lot, a butterfly found Nolan and stayed with him until we left later in the day! It was amazing! It flew onto his shirt and stayed, then his head, then his back, and back onto his head...just hung out with him all day. It was sweet. So we were enjoying the day. Until...(dun, dun, dun....) we got to the exotic animal section....the part you pay for! Ugg. There is a sign there telling you not to bring outside food in...you know, because it's not good for the animals diet and all that... anyway, as you pay your entry fee, they ask if you want to buy food for the animals...there are apples and then little bags you can buy. So, I buy each child a bag and we go in. As soon as we open the bag, I remember why I don't like this place. Animal cookies? Really? That is the special animal diet? What? Since when did monkeys eat animal cookies and lemurs eat donuts? ( yes, for real...a lemur was holding a nasty donut in it's hand, munching on it.)....We go on....the deer are nice, they have a huge pasture...the peacock was beautiful, we loved the ducks....and birds...and potbelly pigs and the tortoise, all really cute and fun to see. We go on further....the poor bear is sad...looks like it shouldn't even be there anymore, and oh, none of the animals eat the apples...but all of them gobble up the silly animal cookies. The rodent that was in the cage with the doves (?) looked like it had been hunting them...there was an injured bird in the bottom of the cage and that rodent was chasing all the birds. Next up, coyotes...the saddest thing I've ever seen. They had tiny little runs (smaller than dog runs) and they were just pacing back and forth around the perimeter of the fence, there is actually a little trench. Sad. Anway, it all came back to me and I felt really sad about it all. Especially that I was supporting it. I vow publicly, not to return and support that business. If they would take the exotic animals out and make it a domestic deal...with petting area and feeding (real animal food), then it wouldn't bother me so much. But to know that I paid money to get in and then paid more to feed the animals food that isn't even good for people....really bothered me. What are your thoughts? Have you been there? How was it? Would you return? We ended up having a good day together and we enjoyed our butterfly friend and even enjoyed some golf while we were there. The weather was gorgeous and it was so nice to be out.

Nolan's class has been working on a science unit study involving rockets. As part of the study, they built their own rockets and learned about how they work. I had the honor of watching Nolan launch his rocket! I'm so thankful to his teacher. Nolan has such a sense of accomplishment from this project and a greater appreciation for science and for patience during the process.

Is it possible that my little precious one is thirteen already? Seriously? (sigh) I just can't believe it. It seems like just yesterday that I was holding my first baby and preparing to move to PA...

On the morning of her birthday, I had a little bit of an emotional moment when I realized that this time has gone so quickly. I had the realization that I have just 5 short years with her before she's officially an "adult!"...I started panicking, wondering if that is long enough to teach her all the things I want her to know before then....wondering if I could teach her everything I want her to know....scanning in my head, the people I know that may need to fill those shoes....wishing someone could share that role with me...being sad because he can't..... (sigh)....but then I snapped out of it, after all, we had a birthday to celebrate!

So, we had a pancake breakfast and off to school we all went! Over the weekend, Teah had a slumber party with four of her friends. I can tell you that not much slumbering happened! What did happen was a lot of silliness! Lots of laughing, game playing, balloon tossing, dancing and singing, manicures and pedicures, and lots of playing "truth or dare!" (an ipod touch app)...oh my! I got quite a glimpse of what 13 is like now...and you know what? I am really glad it's not like 13 was when I was that age! I'm so proud of these girls! They are all super neat, smart, sensible girls! I'm impressed! Well, there was that one dare....licking armpits or something gross...but besides that, I was really pleased with how it all went. I'm proud of Teah for choosing to spend time with such great people.

And how about that cake? A green cow, really? I can't believe she wanted a cow on her cake and I felt more than a little embarrassed when i ordered it....I don't really get it, it's some kind of inside joke between the girls....but the girls at DQ cracked up and thought it was awesome, and Teah and friends were thrilled with how it turned out!

Anyway, Happy Birthday Teah! You are so loved! I'm thrilled with the person you are becoming and I hope you remain so sure of yourself as we journey through the teenage process! Thanks to everyone who has helped add to Teah's walk.

Nolan was part of the 2nd and 3rd grade music program recently. He did a fabulous job! As you all know, Nolie is rather shy...but what I really enjoyed was watching him come out of his shell in this show. He was enjoying the songs and did all the choreography and smiled through

the entire performance! Really! He also played "Oh, When the Saints" on his recorder and I could recognize the tune! I'm so proud of him!

Teah and Sidney were looking for something to do, so I encouraged them to take the kayaks down and put them in the lake. The suggestion was met with some hesitation, but eventually they decided to do it and they had a great time! I could hear them laughing from the house! I went down to the boat launch to see if I could see them...and when I got there, I started cracking up! They were soaking wet....so of course, I had to yell out to them and see what the dealy-o was. Apparently, Sid had capsized....and so, to make her feel better, Teah "accidentally" tipped her yak over too. I mean, it is not exactly warm yet here in PA, so I don't think I would like to be in the cold lake water...if I didn't have to be, but whatever! They were having a great time, laughing and paddling. Then the boys decided that they wanted turns too, so needless to say, we spent the day on the lake, taking turns in the yaks! I'm so glad because I really enjoyed watching them all find their way on the lake! I would really like to get kayaks for the boys too, so we can all enjoy them. Maybe birthdays this year...and the other part of this excursion that I loved was that we didn't have to drive anywhere! A benefit of living at the lake, I guess!

Daddy's Angel Day

So today is the 2 year anniversary of Dennis' passing. We all still miss him so very much. As we did last year, the children helped me make "angel cake"...to celebrate the day Daddy became an angel...we just hung out together and shared our memories of him and what we miss the most. We looked at pictures and popped in a home video. It made our hearts glad to see him and hear him again. But it also left us feeling sad....so...we decided to get away and make some happy memories today. We headed to a hotel for a fun overnight...we saw a movie and swam in the hotel pool...snuggled together and watched cable tv all night! Plans for tomorrow are to hit Chuck E. Cheese before we head home...the children remember the many, many times their Daddy played with them there...he got as excited as they did!! Nakai told me today that he really wished Daddy could see us from way up in heaven...and when I told him I was sure he could, he got the biggest grin and looked up and said, "daddy, daddy, I love you!"..."Hi daddy!"...it was the sweetest thing. And that inspired Nolan to write this message for Daddy....on his angel day. Happy Angel Day, Daddy! We love you so.

Teah's room redo...

...So, when we moved into our home, I told the kids that we would redo each of their rooms, one per year. Last year, Nolan's room was selected because of his asthma. We painted his walls and had the carpet removed and laminate installed...he loved it!

This year, Teah's was chosen because of a major stain (from a disgusting stomach flu) on her carpet that I could not get out.. She was given the choice of laminate or eco carpet. She chose the carpet (made of recycled water bottles). She had a friend sleep over to help her clear the furniture out of the room in preparation for the carpet install the next morning. Shortly into the day, she and Sidney came to me and said, "we thought it would be really cool to splatter paint the room...you know, if we had more time.."...I thought for a minute about how much I hate paint prep and cleanup and how that was shifting the focus from the task at hand...but then...I realized that this should really not be something to fret about...it's her room....if she wants to throw paint at the walls....why not?!? So you should've heard the shrieks when I gave them the okay...IF they got the room cleared, pronto! Wow, did they work! I figured that since the carpet was coming up anyway, it was the perfect time to paint...so off to Lowe's I went for purple, pink, orange, blue, and yellow paint....(little cans!) They went in, shut the door, cranked the music and didn't emerge for a few hours...though I did hear giggling and laughing...When the door opened....I almost couldn't breathe! There was paint everywhere! Even on the ceiling! And...you should've seen the girls! But...what I noticed most was the smiles...and boy, do we need more of those! These pics aren't the best, but you'll get the idea! She's still putting final touches on, like bedding and art, etc...watch for a follow up post! So nice to make the girl happy! And...just as planned, the carpet was ripped out and new carpet installed...so...my to-do list didn't grow at all! It's so nice to say YES! And..the room did turn out really cool...she loves it:)

A tie! Nolan graciously accepted the 2nd place prize...a giftcard, because he already has a bike!

The judges told me that the only way to break the tie is to deduct a point for a piece that was on the ground near Nolan's space...Nolan was so excited and proud! The entries were judged on many different categories including: use of color, sustainable building techniques, landscaping, and cleanliness of building site...among a few other things....the goal was to create a fantasy house. Nolie, we're proud of you! The age group was 9-13!

...our first time and it was so much fun! Very cold and somewhat challenging, but we had a very nice day together. After Nolan found the cache, we all enjoyed sliding on the ice out on the lake. Even Scooter had a great day! Fun family days like this make long Pennsylvania winters more bearable. We can't wait to do it again.

We have really enjoyed being snowed in the last two days! It reminds us of our homeschool days....plenty of time to spread out and do what inspires each of us. When I woke up today, Nolan was already spread out on the dining room floor with a sketch pad and pencil, trying to convince Scooter to stand still so he could draw him! Teah created a beautiful door piece in her room and Nakai has gotten oh so much game time in...mostly online... The boys were outside right after breakfast and have been in and out all day! I've had lots of time with my sticks...finished the two projects above and have a gift on the sticks for little miss Marlie now!

I've spent lots of time in the kitchen too...feeding the freezer for those busy school nights when there is no time to cook. Banana bread, pancakes, french toast, chili, taco meat, meatloaf...hard boiled eggs, and lots of other yummy stuff....all while lounging in my pjs!!! heavenly! Oh, how I've missed my days at home! I'm really cherishing these snow days...go ahead weather....snow!

Reflections Ceremony

Back in September, Nolan entered a competition through the PTA, called "Reflections." Reflections is an art competition with several categories such as: Visual arts, film and video production, photography, dance, music, literature, etc... All entries surround the theme...This year..."Together We Can".... So, Nolan entered the photography category and his theme was..."Together We Can Heal Mother Earth"....

He took several great pictures and in the end, entered a photo montage. Well, he placed 1st for his division locally and will now move on to the district level competition! Congrats Nolan!! I am so proud of him...the competition was totally voluntary, and it happened during the very busy soccer season when Nolan had practice after school 5 nights a week. He didn't have to do it, but he chose to and he did his best. I love this kid!

So, I wanted to start the New Year off right and go hike the trails...I had the boys, Teah and her sleepover guest Sidney....why did I think I'd be able to just go and hike for the day? Whatever! We had the most amazing day! So much fun! The boys were insane little daredevils with their sleds at the skate park...there was no way I could walk away from that...I was positive someone would need the emergency room...(but happily, no one did!)...after the skate park, we did manage to walk 3 miles on the trail before everyone (including me) was crying from the cold...and then we headed for the playground where everyone warmed up by playing hard for a little while. So, not my ideal plan for the day, but you know, sometimes plans are meant to be broken...I laughed so hard! Thanks kids!

Uncle Leon Visits CG Johnson Elementary

Integrated World Arts Inc. had the pleasure of hosting Leon Briggs during Indigenous People's Month. Leon came down from the Tonowanda Reserve in New York, to talk to the 1st, 3rd and 4th grade students at C.G. Johnson Elementary School. Everyone enjoyed his visit and Nakai and Nolan were proud to introduce "Uncle Leon" to their friends at school! We really enjoyed having him stay the night and hearing his stories about life on the rez. I'm thankful the students in our homogenous area were able to gain some exposure into a different culture and some appreciation for diversity. He talked a bit about cultural similarities/differences, Native politics, did some storytelling and some share and tell...he also played some music for the students...

How fun to get away and spend the day in Nature's playground! We enjoyed walking on trails and hiking and playing on the glacier rocks...the boys loved searching for animals (Nolan found a dead fish)...and playing in the sand...Nakai made a nest for the giant bull worm...whatever! Teah enjoyed herself too...it was really nice to get away from our routine and head to the woods for the day...I finished it up with some knitting on the beach...ahh, this is the life!

This was the first year ever that Teah decided not to Trick or Treat! She and I stayed home and handed out the goods, while Andy and the boys went Trick or Treating... I did laundry, she watched a movie (we only had 5 children come to the door)...it was relaxing after the crazy birthday weekend we had!

The boys were back in an hour and a half! They decided they were finished...I'm always so proud of my children on Halloween! They usually only want to go down one street and then they are ready to come home. We always make sure to hit the nursing home though...the residents just love to see the children in costume!

7? Seriously? Where did the time go? How could it have been 7 years? I feel old. Anyway,

This precious boy has indeed turned 7 years old. We had a simple, private, family party early in the morning on the day of his birth...it was sweet, calm, wonderful. He was excited and so happy to have cake and celebrate with his family. (makes a mama so glad) He was expecially thrilled to see a shiny,new bike in the living room from Grandma Janet! (we were late to school because he just had to try it out!)

And then...we hosted a party with friends...at. our. house. We had at least 70 people here...teeny ones, wee ones, bigger ones, older ones, etc...lots of people! Thankfully I had lots of helpers...(thanks Mamas...you know who you are) Games were played..(pass the brains, monster freeze dance, mummy wrap up, pin the face on the pumpkin, pinata). Cake and ice cream were eaten (wonder if that cake was yummy...I didn't get a piece)...gifts opened....the highlight of the afternoon was when we had 50 rolls of toilet paper unrolled in my living room! Seriously! The children all had so much fun...wrapping each other, and then unwrapping, and then swimming, and throwing, and making "snow" angels.....(and yes, for those of you wondering...we are recycling all that paper!) I felt a bit crazy at times, but once I sunk down into that paper "snow"...I knew all was well! Nakai certainly celebrated his birthday in style! It was so nice to have much of the old crew back together again (Mc Fam, Mama C's crew, Mama Jilly and fam, Mama Sue and the girls, Grandma and Grandpa Sanborn, Stokers) and to have so many new faces in our space (thanks Darlene and Amanda)...it always feels good to bless your space with laughter, friends and fun!

Uncle Paul Visits

Uncle Paul is here from Peru! It's always so nice to see him and hear about his adventures. We enjoyed a fire and looked at all his pictures, and listed to his stories of life with the Shipibo people. Nolan was excited to show him his longest snake skin....and then was excited to see the one Uncle Paul brought! Uncle Paul fell in love with snakey while he was here...just couldn't put him down. He promises that he will have one as soon as he gets back to Peru! He also brought an ojo de dios (eye of God) for Nolan...whom he felt needed some extra protection! (ya think?) Teah enjoyed seeing pics of Uncle Paul's "girlfriends"...and of the children in the village...Nakai insisted on a game of left, right, center and then it was bedtime! Uncle Paul surprised us when he showed up at Nolan's soccer game the next day...that was fun! Can't wait to see him again in April...but until then, we'll look at pics and remember our time together.

Nolan and Nakai decided right after Dennis crossed over, that they did not want to cut their hair, but instead, wanted to have braids, "like Daddy"...and they've been adamant about it ever since. I honored their wishes and supported them fully in their decisions. It has been a year and a half...in that time, as their locks grew longer, they've had to defend their choices to unknowing people. Not sure why people think it's their business to comment on people's hair choices, but it seems they do. On an almost daily basis, someone would call them "girls"...resulting in a few different reactions from the boys...assertiveness from Nolan...and often, tears & hurt feelings from Nakai.

Late summer came and after some bullying by a peer, Nakai asked me if he could cut his hair. I told him that how he wore his hair was up to him and that he certainly could cut it if he wished, but that I would like him to wait a week and think about it again. A week passed and he still wanted it cut...he was tired of being called a girl. So...we went and got it cut. he was very happy! When we came home, Nolan was very quiet...after a little while, he came to me and asked..."Mama? Do you think Daddy would be mad at me if I cut my hair?" Me: "absolutely not! Your daddy wants you to be happy, no matter how you wear your hair. And..you could always grow it again later." Nolan: "okay, can I get my hair cut?" So...back to the salon...another braid lost.

So, Teah was at a friend's house, sleeping over...I was craving nature, and the boys needed a plan for the day. We headed out to S.B. Elliot State park for their annual High Mountain Arts Fest. What a beautiful day! Strolling through the park, watching artists create, oohing and ahhing....and just being present with my boys...dream come true these days. Life seems so busy...we're moving at an incredibly unreal pace it seems. What a blessing to offer up the day to my children...it filled me up!

On the trampoline!

What an experience! I really enjoyed being all snuggled up together with my children! They wanted to camp, I didn't have time to dig out the tent and stuff...so we compromised and camped on the trampoline! I urge everyone to try it! Your back doesn't hurt, you're off the ground so no visits from wild life, and...best of all, you can see all the stars and Grandmother moon as you drift off to sleep! Try it!!

Gone is the old, stinky carpet and bare white walls! Nolan is very happy with his new floor...and I am hopeful he will breathe so much better now! He loves the green walls too and says he doesn't even want to put all his stuff back in! We'll see about that!!!

Grasshopper is ready to learn! And...Teah is more than willing to sweetly teach him what she knows. Be still my heart...to see my children remembering, asking about, wanting to learn the arts that their Daddy loved so. I was amazed to witness Teah teaching Nakai tae kwon do....quietly, from a distance. And Nakai...like a little sponge, soaking it all up. This makes my heart so glad...I am finding that Nakai is very interested in martial arts...more so than Teah and Nolan....and so...I am now on a search to find someone qualified and compassionate...with a gentle grace and passion for their craft...who can lovingly teach my sweet Nakai....

We were a bit sad when we realized a garden in the ground would probably not be possible here at the lake, due to the deer population...but then...we decided to try container gardening this year. We were very pleased with our meager harvest! And...the front porch became my very favorite place to enjoy my morning tea..it smelled so wonderful! Just think...we can bring most of our plants in this fall and hopefully enjoy them for some of the winter! Happy Gardening!

We always try to do something fun after our trips to the dentist...today, it was playing by the fountain before jumping on the highway. Everyone was smiling and playing and running....no cavities and free family fun! What could be better than that?

The drive-in

When was the last time you went to a drive-in movie? For me, it had been much too long. I had forgotten all the wonderful benefits of spending an evening this way. How wonderful to have a picnic together in the grass, to put on your jammies before it got dark, to run and play up by the big screen, with people you've only just met, to listen to the sounds of happy folks around you, and then...to snuggle up, on blankets on the grass or in the back of your Trailblazer...and watch a movie together. On this trip, it was Toy Story 3...which everyone really enjoyed. Can you believe Andy is old enough for college? Has it been that long? Wow! Anyway, this is how we spent our last evening with Grandma Janet and Kaliyah...hanging out together at the drive-in. So much fun! (If only mom could've stopped texting for a minute!!! Ha!) None of us were still awake for the second movie, so we headed home....maybe next time!

How nice to have mom visit! Her help was so welcomed! It worked out perfectly, as I had to work that week. The kids got to hang with Grandma and Kaliyah during the day and then I got to get involved in the evenings. We mostly enjoyed being at home together...children played in the backyard and inside when it was hot and Mom and I got to chat. We went bowling and swimming and to the park and stuff. But the real fun day was when we went to DelGrosso's! (pics to follow) Thanks so much mom for coming up and helping out! I really didn't expect for you to clean my house while you were here...but I'm so thankful that you did!! I love yoU!
